Chicken Wire Masthead

A message from Wally Cekala

Wally

Welcome to the May issue of Chicken Wire! Finally, it's time to pack up the sweaters, fire up the grills and pull out the beach chairs. It's also time to introduce an exciting new contest we call "How Do You Willow Tree?" There are plenty of chances to win - but there's also a great opportunity to give back and make a big difference to your favorite charity. I invite you to read more about it.

Also in this issue, we follow Willy T. all over New England - or at least try to keep up with him. Check out our new blog, Chicken Scratch, and you can get a sneak peek of Willy T. practicing to throw out the first pitch at the PawSox game on May 29th. And finally, we have some tasty new Willow Tree selections to tell you about, whether you're visiting your favorite deli or our very own retail store.

As always, if you have any suggestions for future issues, feel free to contact me. And remember to join in the fun on our Facebook page. In fact, why not like us on Facebook? There are lots of prizes to win there, too.

See you in the next issue.

Introducing the greatest Willow Tree contest ever! "How do you Willow Tree?"

In this contest, the winning is only beginning!

You’ve always loved Willow Tree Chicken Salad. So it’s only fair to get some love back! Now you – AND your favorite charity – can win big.

How do you Willow Tree? is far more than a recipe contest. It’s more like an incredibly delicious eating contest – only you don’t have to stuff yourself, you don’t get on ESPN (sorry), and you don’t get some weird “championship belt” that doesn’t go with anything in your wardrobe.

Actually, the prizes are way better.

Just tell us how you Willow Tree!

Translation: How do you enjoy your favorite Chicken Salad? Do you eat it in a hot dog bun? Add chips, pickles or olives? Scoop it with celery sticks? Spread it on your favorite cracker? Grab it straight from the fridge at 3 a.m.? Do you have a super-special Willow Tree Chicken Salad recipe that you’re keeping from the rest of Willow Tree Nation?

Whatever you do, simple or not, we’d love to know about it! Tell us and win! Entries for our first winner will be accepted through the end of June. Click here to get started!

Leading off for the PawSox: Willy T!

If you haven't yet made plans for Sunday, May 29th, we've got some for you. McCoy Stadium is the place to catch a rare glimpse of your favorite baseball star, um, Willy T! (OK, OK, the PawSox and Indianapolis Indians will be there, too.) Not only will our favorite mascot be throwing out the first pitch - he'll also be walking the concourses, visiting the barbecues and trolling the berm (like we said in the last issue, that grassy thing in the outfield). Be sure to check our Facebook page frequently for PawSox ticket giveaways. Also, visit our blog to see Willy T practicing for his first pitch.

Why Willy T. needs a pedometer:
He's everywhere! He's everywhere!

Willow Tree’s Willy T. just can’t get enough of a good cause. In fact, you can find him all over the place this month and next, without looking very hard at all.

On May 15th, Willy T. joined in the fun at the Boston Kidney Walk at Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo.

On June 4th, Willy will be walking the 5K “Easter Seals Walk with Me,” at Roger Williams Park in Providence. Check-in is at 9 am, the walk starts at 10 and a post-walk celebration commences at 11.

The very next week, on Thursday June 9th, Willy T. strolls in the Easter Seals Walk in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Finally, on Sunday, June 12th, Willy T. heads to Boston for the NSTAR Children’s Hospital Walk. Stepping off from the DCR Hatch Shell, the 7-mile walk starts at 11 am and the 2-mile walk begins at noon.

One thing’s for sure: Willow Tree’s mascot won’t have to worry about staying fit.

What's in Store

"We love the summer season."

That's retail store manager Chris Cekala talking about Memorial Day, the unofficial start of the most active of seasons. And he's got everything in store for you to make the most of summer.

It starts with salads, all homemade. In the last issue of Chicken Wire!, we told you about making our own potato salad (both red and white), cole slaw and side salads. New this month is Willow Tree's Greek pasta salad.

Meanwhile, grilling aficionados will find even more great marinades to tantalize their taste buds. In addition to Willow Tree’s best-selling lemon basil and roasted red pepper varieties, Chris & Company have come up with barbecue, teriyaki and bourbon chicken marinades, all available now.

“There’s nothing like homemade,” says Chris. “The best way to make ‘em is to make ‘em yourself.”

As he does every year, Chris can’t wait to see summer’s early birds – beachgoers, campers, picnickers – show up early to help him open the store this season.

So what are you waiting for?
